Babies Bones. A baby's body has about 300 bones at birth. So, babies do not truly have extra bones.

Babies have nearly 100 more bones than adults. At birth, the cranium has three unfused plates, allowing for passage of the baby's head through the birth canal. A baby’s bones consist of more cartilage than solid bone.

Most of this is cartilage which later turns into bone and scientists call this process ossification. The difference between the total number of adult and baby bones is a relatively simple explanation. Bones in the human body fall into three categories: Babies have more bones so their bodies are more flexible to fit through the birth canal.
