By about week 28 of pregnancy, the lungs have developed enough that premature babies can breathe on their own — although the lungs and circulatory system still need some more time to mature. As mentioned earlier, the fluid in baby’s lungs is amniotic fluid. Meconium aspiration syndrome (mas) happens when a newborn has trouble breathing because meconium got into the lungs.

When food, drink, or stomach contents make its way into your child’s lungs, it can damage the tissues there. Some babies may also require ecmo immediately following birth to assist with breathing. Meconium aspiration syndrome (mas) happens when a newborn has trouble breathing because meconium got into the lungs. Pneumonia needs to be treated with antibiotics.
